Argentine Tango
Tango originated in Buenos Aires towards the end of the 19th century. Immigrants from Europe mixed with settlers from other South American countries. Polkas, waltzes and mazurkas combined with the Habanera from Cuba to form Milonga. The African population in Buenos Aires danced Cadombe, a mix of many different African traditions. Cadombe then mixed with Milonga to form Tango.
By 1910, Tango had been introduced in Paris, and by the start of the First World War in 1914, it had spread across much of Europe and was also seen in the USA.
There is no prescribed timing for Tango, unlike other dances. Tango relies heavily on improvisation. The dance progresses around the room anticlockwise.
Tango is a very sensual, passionate and dramatic dance.
