Salsa
Salsa music and dance derives largely from the Cuban Son but was influenced by many other Cuban dances, including Mambo in particular. In the 1950s, Mambo shaped what is now Salsa. It was the 1970s that Salsa became very popular. Salsa is one of the main dances of Cuba and Puerto Rico and it is now danced around the world.
Salsa music is in 4/4 time. Most salsa music is in the range of 80 – 120 beats per minute. The music is characterised by its complex percussive rhythms.
Salsa means sauce in Spanish and the dance is flirtatious and fast.
