Swing

Swing dances developed concurrently with swing jazz in the 1920s and 1930s. Swing dances include Lindy Hop, Charleston, Shag, Balboa and Blues. The most popular Swing dance is Lindy Hop. Lindy Hop developed in Harlem in the US.

Lindy Hop evolved from partnered Charleston. It is characterised by an 8 beat circular basic, improvisation and the ability to adapt to include other figures in 6 and 8 beats.

Lindy Hop featured in many films in the 1940s, including the famous Hellzapoppin and Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers.
