Viennese waltz

The Viennese waltz is the oldest of all the ballroom dances. It emerged in the second half of the 18th century in Austria. The Fleckerl (rotation on the spot) can be traced back to Alpine folk dances. Travelling turns came in the late 18th and early 19th century when the dance moved from the countryside to the great ballrooms of Vienna.

Viennese waltz is one of the five standard ballroom dances.

Viennese waltz is normally in 3/4 time (sometimes 6/8) and at a tempo of around 58 to 60 bars per minute.

Viennese waltz is characterised by a smooth, sweeping, gliding movement across the dance floor. It is a very graceful and exciting dance.
